How “Social Media” fares in Social Media
I consistently fall prey to following and subscribing to many agencies, Social Media marketing companies, blogs and enthusiasts. I opened up my Google Reader today and became overwhelmed with the amount of information on the subject of Social Media that had fed in pretty much overnight
(I don’t know why I’ve never noticed this before, haha). After reading a few NY Times and CNN articles on random social media related topics, (is it weird that these gigantic news moguls are writing about things like annoying Facebookers?)
I put my analytics tools to work to see exactly how “Social Media” itself fares in Social Media.

First I look at the general term “social media” and the frequency of mentions in the blog world. I see that there’s a lot of buzz, but strangely enough, it looks like people don’t like to talk about social media on the weekends. LOL. WEIRD. The only time I have to write these posts are on the weekends…..
So I move on.Where do people talk about social media the most? Dun, dun dun, no surprise here. TWITTER takes 64% of all talks in the past month. Maybe its easier to discuss Social Media things in 140 characters or less…..
Social Media Marketing. The new favorite service of every agency, marketing co, business, the desperately unemployed are offering. But what about all the other stuff like building websites and online advertising in general? Social Media Marketing dominates the conversations in Social Media. The graph below communicates that (in the past month) 60% of all conversations in Social Media are directly related and talking about Social Media Marketing. They’re ahead of “Digital Marketing” by more than half. Crazy.
It’s the talk of the interwebworld. Social Media is obviously making an impact. Everyone is talking about Social Media Marketing. Should you be?
